Piñones: alcapurrias, bacalaítos and the coast road
A short drive east from Isla Verde brings us to Piñones, where the coastal road, local kiosks and ocean air make a memorable outing.

A coastal drive worth taking slowly
One of our favorite ways to spend a few hours from Casa Collection PR is to head east along the coast toward Piñones. From our home base at Condominio Marbella del Caribe Este in Isla Verde, the drive is about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. The route itself is part of the experience: ocean views, palms and glimpses of the shoreline set a relaxed pace before you even arrive.
We like to make this an unhurried outing rather than a tightly scheduled excursion. Bring your camera, keep an eye out for places to pull over safely, and let the day unfold around food and the coast. Piñones feels wonderfully different from the hotel strip, while still being an easy trip from the apartments.
What to order at the kiosks
The roadside kiosks are a big part of Piñones’ appeal. Look for alcapurrias, savory fritters often made with a seasoned root-vegetable dough and filled with meat or other ingredients, and bacalaítos, crisp codfish fritters. You may also see other Puerto Rican favorites, snacks and fresh drinks, depending on the kiosk and what is being served that day.
Our family strategy is simple: browse a little, choose a few things to share, and try what catches your eye. These are casual places, so it is easy to turn lunch into a tasting tour. If you have dietary needs, ask what is in each item before ordering; recipes and available choices can vary from one stop to another.
Make room for a sit-down meal
If you would rather settle in for a full meal, there are sit-down options in the area too. The Drift by the beach, El Nuevo Aquarium and ViVo Beach Club are names visitors may want to explore. Each offers a different way to enjoy the coastal setting, from a meal with the sea nearby to a longer, more leisurely stop.
We recommend checking current opening hours and arrangements before setting out, especially if you have a particular place in mind. With children, it can help to decide whether you want a quick kiosk lunch or a table where everyone can take a break. Either way, the shoreline is close enough to make the outing feel like more than just a meal.
A few practical tips
Bring some cash. Many places may accept cards, but cash can be helpful at roadside kiosks or for small purchases, and it gives you flexibility if connectivity or payment options are limited. There is no need to plan around a particular price; menus and costs change, so check directly when you arrive.
We also suggest going in daylight. The route is more enjoyable when you can take in the coastal scenery, and it is easier to make spontaneous stops. Weekends can be busy, especially around popular food spots, so expect a livelier atmosphere and allow extra time for traffic and parking. Comfortable clothes and shoes are a good idea if you plan to wander.
A good fit for the whole family
For us, Piñones works because it can be as simple or as full a day as we want. Ignacio and Jennifer can linger over the food and scenery, while Dani and Julia get a change of scene and the fun of choosing something to try. There is no complicated itinerary: drive east, stop when something looks good, and enjoy being outdoors together.
Afterward, the short ride back to Isla Verde makes it easy to return to the comfort of the apartment. Our building has a pool, a children’s playground and private beach access, so the family can wind down close to home. Piñones is a lovely reminder that a memorable Puerto Rico day can begin with a scenic drive and a shared plate of something delicious.
